Der 1977 in Wesel (NRW) geborene Musiker ist heute als Organist, Arrangeur und Improvisator tätig und geht neben seinen Aufgaben als Domorganist und Kantor am St. Patrokli-Dom (Soest) einer vielseitigen Konzerttätigkeit nach.
Nach dem Studium der Kirchenmusik (A-Examen, Aachen), der künstlerischen Reifeprüfung “Orgel” (Prof. Johannes Geffert, Köln) sowie privater Studien im Bereich der Improvisation (Ansgar Wallenhorst, Ratingen) wurde er 2009 zum Domorganisten und Kantor an St. Patrokli in Soest ernannt.
Sein improvisatorisches Talent stellt er hier in vielen unterschiedlichen Gottesdienstformen in den Dienst der Liturgie. Seit Beginn der Coronamaßnahmen (März 2020) gestaltet er ebenfalls die täglichen LIVE-Stream Messen, die im YouTube Kanal der Gemeinde mitgefeiert werden können.
Sowohl im liturgischen als auch im konzertanten Bereich ist er ein häufig gefragter Instrumentalist. So trat Madrzak im Rahmen des Katholikentages 2018 im Münsteraner Dom auf. Im gleichen Jahr gestaltete er den Rundfunkgottesdienst, und 2019 den Fernsehgottesdienst aus dem Soester St. Patrokli-Dom.
Konzerteinladungen führten ihn bereits an wichtige kirchenmusikalische Zentren in Deutschland (Kathedralen von Aachen, Bamberg, Limburg, Paderborn, Magdeburg u.a.) und Europas (Belgien, Polen, Frankreich, Spanien) sowie den USA (Californien).
Seine musikalische Vielseitigkeit äußert sich in innovativen Konzertprogrammen, welche die Orgel einem breiten Publikum vermittelt. So führte er Olivier Messiaens “La nativite du seigneur” in Kombination mit einer Livepainting-Performance im Soester Dom auf.
Im Bereich der Improvisation kombiniert Madrzak die Kunst des Stehgreifspiels gerne mit der Literatur; z. B. auf Texte des englischen Autors Oscar Wilde.
Durch Orgelführungen und spezielle Kinderprogramme („Peter und der Wolf“, „Der Nussknacker“) führt Madrzak zudem ein junges Publikum an die “Königin der Instrumente” heran. Während des 1. Lockdown im Jahre 2020 entstanden so 10 Orgel-Erklär-Videos, die auf dieser HP zu sehen sind.
Für die seltene Kombination von Orgel und Schlagzeug verfasste er eigene Arrangements. Aus der Zusammenarbeit mit dem Soester Schlagzeuger Günter Bönner entstanden so bereits zwei CD-Einspielungen.
Seinem Interesse für mittelalterliches Musizieren folgend, ließ er sich im Jahre 2017 vom Dresdner Orgelbauer Marcus Stahl ein 16-töniges Portativ (kleine, tragbare Orgel) bauen, das er seitdem in Liturgie und Konzert erklingen lässt.
Des weiteren bildete er sich im Bereich der „Dispokinese“ (Körperhaltung des Musikers) beim renommierten Begründer dieser physiologischen Fachrichtung G. O. van de Klashorst in Mülheim fort.
Stefan Madrzak, born in Wesel (Lower Rhine area) in 1977, today is a musician working as organist, arranger and improviser. Beside his main task as organist and cantor in St Patrokli, the cathedral of Soest (North Rhine-Westphalia), he performs in versatile concerts.
After studying church music in Aachen, where he passed his examination A, he went on with postgraduate studies with Prof Johannes Geffert at the Cologne University of Music which he finished with a diploma in organ playing. Further private studies in improvisation were taken with Ansgar Wallenhorst, a German church musician, in Ratingen. In 2009 he was appointed organist and cantor in St Patrokli, where he has been working since then.
He commissions his improvisatory virtuosity to serve liturgy in a variety of religious services. Since March 2020, when the COVID-19 measures were put into practice, he has been playing in live stream services, which can be attended via the YouTube channel of the parish.
In both liturgy as well as performances in operatic form he is an instrumentalist much requested. For instance Madrzak performed during the German Catholic Convention at the cathedral of Muenster in 2018. In the same year he played in a service broadcast on the radio and a year later in a service celebrated in St Patrokli cathedral which was aired on TV.
Invitations for playing concerts have already taken him to a number of important places of church music in Germany, e.g. the cathedrals of Aachen, Bamberg, Limburg, Paderborn, Magdeburg, various European countries like Belgium, Poland, France, Spain, and to California, USA.
His many and innovative concerts show how versatile he is. In these concerts he tries to popularize the organ in various ways. An outstanding example for this is performing Olivier Messiaen’s “La Nativité du Seigneur” (The Nativity of the Lord or The Birth of the Saviour) accompanying a livepainting session in the cathedral of Soest. When improvising Madrzak often combines his art with literature, e.g. texts written by Oscar Wilde.
Conducted tours focusing on organs and special children’s programmes like “Peter and the Wolf“ or “The Nutcracker” are aimed at making the organ as the “Queen of Instruments” interesting for younger people. In the months of the first COVID-19 shutdown in 2020 he produced 10 videos explaining different aspects of the organ. These videos can be found on this website.
His work also comprises the rare idea of combining organ and drums. For this Madrzak arranged various compositions. The cooperation with the well-known drummer Guenter Boenner from Soest has already led to the production of two CDs.
Based on his interest in medieval music he assigned the organ builder Marcus Stahl from Dresden to build a portative organ, consisting of 16 pipes, in 2017. With it he enriches liturgy and concerts.
Finally, Madrzak was also educated in dispokinesis (a form of training and therapy in posture for musicians) by the well-known Dutch physiotherapist Gerrit Onne van de Klashorst, who is an expert in this discipline, in Muelheim.
